Without the water source, there would not be the existence of shophouses and skyscrapers today.
As a transition between the city of the present and the city of the future, it is of utmost importance for urban planners to recognise the importance of preserving heritage through allowing shophouses to continue to be a distinct feature within the city.

no matter how tall the building,it is still a building.
we may not be able to compete in height,
but im sure we are able to compete in depth!

Taken from a park overlooking Yishun Industrial Park and a couple of condominiums, the coexistence of residence, industries and even nature, is the result of extensive urban planning and development, particularly important for a small densely populated Republic.

As the urban landscape changes, some people have found new places to make a living . It seems that in the process of urbanisation, the forms have changed but the functions remain.

So near to us. Yet did we realize that urbanization is gradually crawling into the heartlands? It is this act that is giving residents in the neighbourhood easier access to goods and services that is previously only available in the city. It is this act that is creating an influx of people from all over the country to visit this small little neighbourhood which is previously only known to the nearby residents.

Photo 1:

This is a photo taken near Bras Basah road between 2 pillars. I think there’s a very nice contrast between the towering condominium and the miniature shopping center. It gives people a very smoothing and comfortable feeling when looking at this picture due to the shades of the sky, together with the soft color of the buildings. The glass windows too give people a very classy feeling, reflecting the better standards of living in the city.

Photo 2:

This is taken from outside the national library, giving thee top view of city. With well-developed roads and different modes of transportation on the road, it gives people the “city life” feeling. The orderly arrangement of buildings shows the importance of urban planning. Also take note of the different materials such as glass and concrete, that is used to build the buildings, giving people the trails of how long has this area
been developed.

Perhaps it is important to note the that the effects of urbanisation has differential effects and some people still remain in poverty despite the change in their surroundings.

"urban area equals busy streets?"
think twice...

as busy as the streets may be,
as sophisticated as the buildings may seem,
but it all balances out when there is
greenery and tranquility...
